Exhibits on geology, prehistory, the Gold Rush, transportation, early business, recreation, and early firefighting are on display at the Forest Hill Divide Museum. Exhibits exploring Placer County's rich heritage include the boom days of hydraulic mining, the rise of the county's timber industry, and the birth of the transcontinental railroad. The growth of the region can be experienced at the Golden Drift Museum in Dutch Flat.

   Loomis History

The regions first inhabitants were native Americans, the Maidu tribe being the predominant tribe in the area. Details of the tribe and its way of life have been preserved in an area of the Maidu Cultural Center located in nearby Roseville.

As early as 1825 trappers and hunters following the American River, came into the basin. From those very early days until the Gold Rush of 1849, the foundation for the future prosperity of the region was beginning to be laid. Settlers arriving in the region brought fruits and nuts which were planted in nearby Bear River Valley and gold was discovered in Ophir. Change came overnight as prospectors rushed to the region. Evident today throughout the basin are remnants of mines and areas hydraulically excavated during the rush for gold.

During the 1850s, as miners worked along Secret Ravine, farmers and ranchers began to move into the area. As the population grew, Placer County formed in 1851.

In 1864 the Central Pacific Railroad was constructed through the basin with the communities of Loomis, Rocklin, Penryn and Newcastle developing along the line. By 1872 the transcontinental link had been completed providing access to the eastern United States and an expanded market for the fruits then coming into production on a commercial scale. By 1880 considerable acreage had been planted with mining ditches of earlier days providing the means for irrigation water to the orchards.

A number of fruit packing sheds were built to handle the harvest volumes providing jobs for many of the areas residents. Fruit from this area became world renowned for its quality. Unfortunately, disease destroyed many of the orchards and fruit production began a decline through the years until today it is a very small part of the area’s economy.
